The Brno Waste Treatment Plant in Regular Operation after Reconstruction

A new facility of the Brno Waste Treatment Plant was ceremoniously opened in the presence of representatives of the city of Brno, SAKO Brno a.s., the contractor – the CNIM & Siemens pool of companies and the building supervisor – TENZA a.s. on Wednesday 7 September 2011.

The purpose and aim of the Brno Waste Management Project was to build a combined heat and power unit combusting municipal waste while utilizing the existing plants and equipment of the incinerating plant including the transport (receipt) capacities. TENZA a.s. was the building supervisor responsible for engineering activities including complex supervision of rebuilding and upgrading the plant.

The project complies fully with the requirements of the EU on modern installations using municipal waste for energy production. This waste therefore need not be buried in a landfill but utilized in a combined mode where electricity is generated besides steam delivered to the district heating system. The new facility can meet up to 30 per cent of heat needs of the households and companies in Brno. The operation of the line for fine sorting separated waste from special collection points in Brno is effective as well. The cinders management technology makes it possible to separate metals and sort cinders fractions for their further processing and use in construction industry and reclamation of land.

According to Roman Onderka, City Mayor, one of crucial and critical phases of upgrading the Brno Waste Treatment Plant to a modern and environmentally friendly facility has been competed. Now the Brno Waste Treatment Plant can take advantage of the leading-edge technology, the most advanced of the three municipal waste incinerating plants in the Czech Republic, the other two being in Prague and Liberec, i.e. technology enabling the plant to process sorted waste and use the heat energy for electricity generation.

“The Brno Waste Management Project has contributed to improving the waste disposal in Brno. Thanks to using waste in the SAKO Brno a.s. incinerating plant for heat and electric power generation, the amount of waste buried in landfills can be reduced, which complies with the Waste Management Plan of the Czech Republic. Moreover, the fine sorting line contributes to better utilization of waste produced in the Brno district,” said Karel Peroutka, Managing Director of SAKO Brno a. s.

Karel Sázavský, a Member of the Supervisory Board of TENZA a.s., said: “Twenty-five experienced specialists from our company supervised the whole project starting from preparatory construction work to the successful occupancy permit issuance. By completing it, we have made a considerable advance in waste treatment in Brno and its surroundings, which can be held up as an inspiring example by other regions.”

The total cost of the project was EUR 94.2 million, out of which a considerable part was provided by the European Union and the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic.
